FULFILLING THE ENGLISH REQUIREMENT / Undergraduate Programs

1. What is the English language requirement for admission to undergraduate programs at METU?
All students have to provide an English exam score for admission to an undergraduate program. The indicated score obtained from any of the exams in the table below is sufficient for exemption from the English preparatory course offered by the Department of Basic English.

METU EPE: METU English Proficiency Exam
TOEFL iBT: Test of English as a Foreign Language, Internet-based
TOEFL PBT: Test of English as a Foreign Language, Paper-based
IELTS (Overall score): International English Language Testing System, Academic Version
A Paper-based TOEFLscore (registration through ETS) is only valid with the TWE (Test of Written English) score as indicated in the above table.
A score obtained from a Paper-based TOEFL administered by institutions (Institutional TOEFL) is not valid.

The results of these exams are valid for two years.

 

2. When can I take METU EPE? Do I have to register for the exam?
METU-EPE, SEPTEMBER
Category: Students newly admitted to undergraduate programs and transfer students
Reason: Exemption from the intensive English program at the Department of Basic English and exemption from ENG 101 with credit
Registration: You must indicate that you want to take METU-EPE during registration to the university.

 

METU-EPE, JUNE / METU-EPE, SEPTEMBER
Category:
Department of Basic English students who are entitled to take the exam in accordance with the regulations
Reason: Exemption from the intensive English program at the Department of Basic English and exemption from ENG 101 with credit.
Registration: Your name will autumatically appear on the exam list. (no need for registration)

 

METU-EPE, JULY
Category: Department of Basic English Students who have attended Summer School
Reason: Exemption from the intensive English program at the Department of Basic English and exemption from ENG 101 with credit.
Registration: Your name will autumatically appear on the exam list. (no need for registration)

 

METU-EPE, OCTOBER
Category: Students dismissed from the Department of Basic English due to academic inadequacy and given the right to take the English Proficiency Examination for three years in accordance with the regulations
Reason: Readmission as a Freshman student and exemption from ENG 101 with credit. (Such students can take this exam only at the end of the academic year in which they were dismissed. Students who were dismissed due to non-attendance cannot take this exam.)
Registration: Your name will autumatically appear on the exam list. (no need for registration)

 

METU-EPE, SEPTEMBER / METU-EPE, JUNE
Category: Students who have been dismissed from the Department of Basic English and who are entitled to take the exam in accordance with the regulations
Reason: Readmission as a Freshman student, exemption from the intensive English program at the Department of Basic English and exemption from ENG 101 with credit
Registration: Registration is required within the period indicated on the academic calendar

 

3. Which category of students is not required to pay the exam fee?

  • Department of Basic English students who are eligible to take the exam in accordance with the regulations
  • Students dismissed from the Department of Basic English and who are eligible to take the exam in accordance with the regulations (These students have to apply to the Registrar's Office to take the exam.)
